MultiChoice Slashes DStv Decoder Price by 50% to Win Back Nigerian Subscribers.

In a major move to revive its subscriber base, MultiChoice Nigeria has announced a 50% price slash on DStv decoders, reducing the cost from ₦20,000 to ₦10,000. The decision comes amid a significant decline in customer numbers and growing concerns about affordability.

MultiChoice Launches ‘We Got You’ Campaign

According to John Ugbe, Chief Executive Officer of MultiChoice Nigeria, the discount is part of the company’s new “We Got You” campaign, aimed at rewarding loyal customers and making premium entertainment more accessible.

  • “We want our customers to feel appreciated and to enjoy the best entertainment every day. This offer goes beyond football—DStv is about variety for the entire household,” Ugbe said in a statement on Tuesday.

The campaign is also designed to encourage content discovery across more genres, including:

  • Movies & Series
  • Kids’ Entertainment
  • Local & International News
  • Lifestyle and Documentaries

“This means more channels, more shows, and more reasons to stay connected,” the company added.

Free DStv Package Upgrade Promo

Alongside the decoder discount, MultiChoice also announced a limited-time promotional offer. From June 16 to July 31, 2025, any DStv subscriber who pays in full for their current package will receive a free upgrade to the next subscription tier.

This initiative is positioned as a response to Nigeria’s economic realities, aiming to reduce financial pressure on households while retaining existing customers.

Subscriber Loss and Price Hikes

The promo comes after MultiChoice lost 1.4 million subscribers between March 2023 and March 2025, largely due to repeated price hikes. The company increased DStv and GOtv prices three times in just 12 months:

  • April 2023
  • November 2023
  • May 2024

These adjustments triggered backlash from users and consumer protection groups, many of whom cited the rising cost of living as a reason for cancelling or downgrading their packages.

MultiChoice Seeks to Rebuild Trust

By lowering decoder costs and offering free upgrades, MultiChoice hopes to rebuild trust, regain market share, and appeal to new and returning users who are seeking affordable home entertainment options.
