Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has announced a massive N2 billion intervention fund for the development of critical infrastructure at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Ojere, Abeokuta. In addition, the governor awarded a N2.5 million cash prize to each of the institution’s best graduating students from the 2015/2016 to 2023/2024 academic sessions.
The announcement was made during the 15th combined convocation ceremony of the polytechnic, which covered nine academic sessions and celebrated the graduation of 51,000 students.
MAPOLY Revived from Setbacks, Now Rebounding
Governor Abiodun used the occasion to reflect on the setback caused by his predecessor’s relocation of the institution to Ipokia and its renaming to Ogun State Polytechnic — a decision he described as “not well thought-out.”
- “The institution, once a beacon of academic excellence with over 30,000 students, saw a sharp decline to just 5,000. Through determined efforts and collaboration with the National Board of Technical Examinations (NBTE), we’ve revived MAPOLY, and today, the student population is back up to 13,000,” Abiodun said.
Governor Unveils Major Infrastructure Projects Worth N2bn
Governor Abiodun unveiled a list of intervention projects the state government will embark on at MAPOLY, including:
- A 500-seater ultra-modern lecture theatre
- Construction of the road leading to the main auditorium
- A modern, well-equipped library
- A new building for the Accountancy Department
- Additional internal road networks and infrastructure
“All these projects are part of our N2 billion intervention to reposition MAPOLY as a leading center for human capital development,” the governor stated.
He also charged the graduating students to be bold, innovative, and impactful, urging them to become proud ambassadors of the institution.
MAPOLY Rector Highlights Achievements, Seeks More Support
In his convocation speech, Dr. Babatunde Jolaoso, Rector of MAPOLY, highlighted the peaceful academic environment created under his six-month leadership, as well as some significant strides, including:
- Clearing N76 million debt owed to a commercial bank
- Securing full transmission rights for 99.7FM MAPOLY Campus Radio
- Ongoing infrastructural improvements
He, however, appealed to the state government to fund accreditation exercises, complete abandoned student hostels, and build more lecture halls and roads.
Dabiri-Erewa Advises Youth on Safe Migration, Diaspora Partnerships
Delivering the convocation lecture titled “Diaspora Perspectives and the Influence of STEM in the Globalised World of Today”, Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), cautioned Nigerian youths on the dangers of irregular migration.

- “Some youths end up as modern slaves or victims of forced prostitution due to illegal migration. If you must leave, leave legally,” she advised.
Dabiri-Erewa encouraged the institution to build strategic collaborations with Nigerians in the Diaspora to access global opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Conclusion
The convocation event marks a new chapter in the history of MAPOLY, as the state government intensifies efforts to revitalize education, reward academic excellence, and ensure that no institution under its watch is left behind.
