The Sokoto State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has officially distanced itself from a recent statement made by one of its members advocating for Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko to be considered as Vice Presidential candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
In a press statement released on Sunday in Sokoto, Alhaji Abba Shehu Tambuwal, the ALGON State Chairman and Executive Chairman of Tambuwal Local Government Area, clarified that the controversial remark was the personal opinion of Alhaji Abdullahi Yarima, Secretary of ALGON and Chairman of Kebbe Local Government Area.

“Our dear colleague, who also serves as our scribe, merely expressed his individual opinion. While he is entitled to his views like every other citizen, it must be clearly stated that he was acting on his own,” Tambuwal stated.
Wamakko Has Not Declared Interest in 2027 Vice Presidency – ALGON
ALGON emphasized that Senator Wamakko, currently representing Sokoto North Senatorial District, has not declared any intention to run for vice president. The APC has not initiated any discussions or considerations regarding its 2027 running mate slot.
“The recent claim by Alhaji Abdullahi Yarima alluding to Senator Wamakko’s ambition for the Vice Presidency in 2027 is baseless and lacks credibility. It is premature and misleading to speculate on such matters without official confirmation,” the ALGON chairman stressed.
ALGON Cautions Against Misleading Political Statements
The association warned public officials, particularly its members, to exercise restraint and refrain from making unverified political statements that may mislead the public or cause unnecessary political tension.
- “The people of Sokoto State and Nigerians deserve accurate and responsible communication. We kindly appeal to our colleagues to refrain from making such pronouncements, particularly on weighty national matters,” the statement said.

ALGON reiterated its commitment to transparency, due process, and responsible communication, noting that any official position from the body must follow established approval channels.
“We urge members of the public to disregard the statement, as it was not vetted nor endorsed by ALGON. It does not reflect the stance of the Association,” the statement concluded.
Conclusion
This clarification comes amid growing political speculation ahead of the 2027 general elections, underscoring the importance of accurate political communication and the need for internal unity within key institutions like ALGON.
