President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially concluded his tenure as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, calling on West African leaders to stay united, vigilant, and committed to inclusive development and democratic governance.
The announcement came during the 67th Ordinary Session of ECOWAS, held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja on Sunday, where Tinubu ceremonially handed over leadership to President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone.
A Tenure Marked by Challenges and Commitment
Reflecting on his term, which began in July 2023, President Tinubu expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead ECOWAS through a time of complex political transitions, insecurity, and regional instability.
- “It has been a profound honour and privilege to lead this esteemed body. I thank you for the confidence you placed in me—twice,” he said.
Call for Steadfast Cooperation and Peace
In his remarks, Tinubu stressed the urgent need for deeper cooperation, particularly in the face of security threats and political unrest across the region.
“Economic integration cannot be superimposed on an untenable political environment. Peace and democracy must come first,” he warned.
He encouraged member states to remain responsive to their citizens’ demands and promote people-centered governance, especially focusing on women, youth, and vulnerable populations.
Tinubu Advocates Inclusive Growth and Democratic Values
President Tinubu urged ECOWAS to advance a people-driven development strategy.
“Let us foster inclusive growth that leaves no one behind,” he said. “The youth, women, and vulnerable groups remain central to the future of our region.”
Tribute to ECOWAS Institutions and Summit Organizers
He praised the ECOWAS Commission, community institutions, and technical staff for their dedication and professionalism in organising the summit and maintaining the regional body’s operations during challenging times.
