2027: Rivers, Bayelsa Will Join APC Soon – Senate President Akpabio Predicts.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has confidently predicted that Rivers and Bayelsa States will soon defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as part of the party’s ongoing consolidation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Akpabio made the declaration on Saturday during a grand political rally and reception held in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, to officially welcome Governor Umo Eno into the APC.

“Rivers Will Tumble, Bayelsa Will Join” – Akpabio

In his speech, Akpabio commended the Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, for aligning with the “progressive family” and emphasized that the entire South-South geopolitical zone was gradually embracing APC’s leadership vision.

  • “Governor Sheriff of Delta State, thank you for joining the progressive family and moving the South-South in a progressive direction,” Akpabio said.
  • “Governor Umo Eno, after you, Rivers State will just tumble, after Rivers State, Bayelsa will join.”

He also celebrated APC’s recent success in Edo State, where Governor Bassey Otu was credited with helping deliver victory for Monday Okpebholo, the party’s flagbearer in the recent governorship election.

Umo Eno’s Defection from PDP to APC

Governor Umo Eno’s defection marks a significant political shift in Akwa Ibom. After months of internal crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Eno blamed the party’s instability as the main reason for switching allegiance to the APC.

The defection, which took place on June 6, 2025, drew the attention of the Progressive Governors Forum, as well as key APC national stakeholders.

Sources close to the governor hinted that his decision was influenced by mounting pressure from political allies who believe that the APC is better positioned to deliver development to the South-South.

APC’s 2027 South-South Strategy

The APC appears to be intensifying efforts to dominate the South-South in the lead-up to 2027. With growing speculation that top political actors in Rivers State and Bayelsa State may be warming up to defect, the party is strategically placing itself as the dominant force in the Niger Delta region.

Analysts believe that a strong APC presence in Akwa Ibom, Delta, Edo, Rivers, and Bayelsa could significantly shift the 2027 electoral map, especially if the opposition PDP fails to resolve its internal crises.
