In a major global military development, the United States Navy aircraft carrier USS Nimitz is reportedly en route to the Middle East, cancelling a previously scheduled port visit to Vietnam, amid intensifying hostilities between Iran and Israel.
USS Nimitz Cancels Vietnam Visit, Heads for Strategic Waters
According to MarineTraffic, the USS Nimitz was seen passing through the Malacca Strait at 13:45 GMT on Monday, moving toward the Indian Ocean. The vessel had been expected to dock in Danang, Vietnam, from June 19 to 23, but that visit was abruptly cancelled.
A Vietnamese government official confirmed to AFP that a formal reception aboard the warship, originally set for June 20, was called off following a notice from the U.S. Department of Defense, citing “an emergent operational requirement.”
The U.S. Embassy in Hanoi and a spokesperson for the Nimitz declined to comment on the change in plans.
War Between Iran and Israel Intensifies
- The redeployment of one of the world’s largest warships comes amid the fourth day of sustained hostilities between Israel and Iran, with both sides trading deadly airstrikes and missile attacks.
