In response to the gruesome massacre of nearly 250 citizens in the Yelewata community of Guma Local Government Area, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has arrived in Benue State to assess the situation and restore order.
The Nigeria Police Force confirmed the IGP’s arrival in a brief but urgent statement shared via its official Facebook page on Monday, revealing that the IGP has ordered additional deployment of tactical teams to stem the wave of violence.
🩸 Horrific Attack Near Makurdi
Eyewitnesses say suspected Fulani herdsmen stormed the Yelewata area near Makurdi, the state capital, setting homes ablaze and burning innocent residents alive in what is being described as one of the most horrifying attacks in recent years.
⚠ Youth Protest Rocks Makurdi
In the aftermath, hundreds of angry youths took to the streets of Makurdi on Sunday, staging a powerful protest to demand justice and draw international attention to the persistent killings in Benue.
Many of the protesters carried placards with messages like:
- “Stop the Genocide in Benue”
- “We are Humans, Not Animals.”
- “Our Lives Matter Too”
🗣 IGP’s Swift Response
The police boss, upon arrival, assured citizens of the government’s commitment to protecting lives and promised swift investigations and tactical reinforcements.
“We will not allow this carnage to go unchecked. Tactical teams have been deployed immediately,” — IGP Egbetokun said in a closed briefing.
