Pope Leo Decries Benue Massacre, Offers Prayers for Nigeria’s Christian Communities, (Video) Below.

Pope Leo XIV has condemned the gruesome killing of over 200 people in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria, describing it as a “terrible massacre” of innocent lives.

The Roman Catholic Pontiff made the statement via Vatican News on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, as he led heartfelt prayers for the victims, most of whom were internally displaced persons seeking refuge at a local Catholic mission.

“Around 200 people were brutally killed in Benue State, many of them vulnerable and displaced Christians. I pray for justice, security, and peace in Nigeria,” the Pope said during his Sunday Angelus.

Reacting to the tragedy, Amnesty International Nigeria issued a strong statement on Saturday, calling on the Nigerian government to “immediately end the almost daily bloodshed in Benue State” and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

This latest incident has once again sparked calls for urgent government intervention, enhanced security in rural communities, and protection for displaced persons who remain the most at risk in conflict-prone areas.
