Former President Goodluck Jonathan has officially denied any connection to a viral Instagram post suggesting he is planning to contest the 2027 presidential election.
The post, which was shared by an account bearing Jonathan’s name, featured a politically charged message claiming that Nigeria’s current leaders are “pretending to sleep” and urged citizens to make better choices in the next election cycle.
“Since our current leaders are pretending to sleep, we pray that we will get our good leadership back in 2027; your choice will determine the betterment of our future,” the post read.
The post also included music and an AI-generated image of Goodluck Jonathan shaking hands with former U.S. President Donald Trump, which further fueled speculation online. The post quickly gained traction, racking up over 16,000 views and more than 1,200 comments.
Jonathan’s Media Team Clears the Air
In a swift response to the trending content, Ikechukwu Eze, the media aide to the former president, debunked the post, stating clearly:
“Former President Jonathan does not own an Instagram account.”
Eze emphasized that any Instagram post attributed to Jonathan should be treated as fake news and urged the public to be cautious of impersonators online.
Not the First Time
This isn’t the first time Jonathan’s name has been dragged into unsolicited political activities. Ahead of the 2023 general elections, a presidential nomination form under the All Progressives Congress (APC) was purchased on his behalf by an unnamed support group.
