As part of the 2025 Democracy Day celebrations, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred national honours on dozens of distinguished Nigerians, both living and deceased, for their contributions to the nation’s democratic development.
The announcement was made on Thursday, June 12, during the State of the Nation Address at the joint session of the National Assembly in Abuja.
Among the most notable honorees:
- Kudirat Abiola, posthumously awarded the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR).
- Prof. Wole Soyinka, Nigeria’s Nobel Laureate, honoured with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).
- Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, posthumously awarded the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR).
- Ken Saro-Wiwa and other members of the Ogoni Nine, posthumously recognized with national honours.
President Tinubu also announced a presidential pardon for the late Ken Saro-Wiwa, the Ogoni Nine, and others who will be named later in consultation with the National Council of State.
