Wike Renames Abuja International Conference Centre After President Tinubu.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has officially renamed the Abuja International Conference Centre (ICC) as the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, in honor of Nigeria’s current president.

This announcement was made during the inauguration of the newly rehabilitated facility in Abuja on Tuesday. The renaming, according to Wike, recognizes the leadership and support of President Tinubu in the completion of the project.

“Today, this Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre can stand any other International Conference Centre in the world,” Wike declared.

Halls Named After Key Government Officials

Alongside the main auditorium, several halls within the facility have also been renamed after prominent figures in Nigeria’s three arms of government:

  • Vice President Kashim Shettima
  • Senate President Godswill Akpabio
  • House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas
  • Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola (Kekere-Ekun)

Wike emphasized that the renaming is a recognition of the collaborative effort across all arms of government in supporting the development of the FCT.

“These are the three arms of government working together. So, since this building is under your administration, it is only fitting that these names are honored within it,” Wike stated.

ICC Built in 1991, Now Revamped Under Tinubu

Originally constructed in 1991 during the military era, the Abuja International Conference Centre had seen little improvement until recently. Wike credited the transformation and completion of the upgraded facility to President Tinubu’s leadership and vision.

“Within eight months, Mr. President, this is what we have achieved. Without your leadership, this wouldn’t have been possible,” he added.

Usage Fees Introduced for Sustainability

To ensure the maintenance and sustainability of the world-class facility, Wike announced a new policy where government ministries and agencies will now be required to pay to use the conference centre.

“No more using this place for free weddings or events. If you want to use this beautiful facility, you must pay. That’s the only way we can sustain its maintenance,” he said.

Conclusion

The renaming of the ICC to the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre and the introduction of usage fees reflect a renewed commitment to preserving federal infrastructure while honoring political leadership. This move has sparked public discussion and will likely remain a key talking point in political and civic circles in the weeks ahead.
