The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has firmly declared that Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s alleged political misdemeanors cannot be overlooked, even if he decides to join the party. This statement was made on Tuesday in Abuja by Tony Okocha, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the APC in Rivers State.
Okocha was responding to Governor Fubara’s recent Sallah visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a move that has sparked intense speculation about possible political realignment.
“If Fubara decides to join the APC, that has nothing to do with the issues in Rivers State. His sins cannot be forgiven simply because he joins our party,” Okocha said.
“APC is Not a Dumping Ground” – Tony Okocha
Okocha emphasized that defection into the APC cannot be used as a strategy to evade accountability.
“You can’t jump into APC today and expect your sins to be wiped clean. APC is not a dumping ground for politicians trying to escape consequences of their actions,” he added.
- He also stressed that Governor Fubara has not officially initiated any defection process, saying the party had received no communication from Fubara’s ward.
“He will not enter through the window. He must come through due process—from his ward to the local government, and then to us,” he explained.
Sallah Visit to Tinubu Not a Cause for Concern
When asked about Governor Fubara’s Eid visit to President Tinubu, Okocha said the APC was not threatened by the meeting.
“We can’t dictate who the President sees. Sallah is a period of goodwill. Even former Governor Osoba and Chief Nyesom Wike visited the President. So, there is nothing strange about it,” he said.
No Reconciliation Talks from Fubara – APC
Okocha also dismissed reports of behind-the-scenes reconciliation efforts by Fubara, calling them false and unfounded.

“There’s nothing like reconciliation going on. Nobody has brought any such initiative to our table,” he stated.
Conclusion
The political tension in Rivers State continues to intensify, with the APC distancing itself from Governor Fubara, despite his recent visit to President Tinubu. The party’s firm stance indicates a deeper rift within the state’s political structure and highlights the growing complexity of political realignments in Southern Nigeria.
