Defection Crisis: PDP Set to Flush Out Disloyal Members in South-South Restructuring Ahead of 2027 Elections.

ABUJA, NIGERIA —

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced plans to overhaul its South-South zonal and state leadership structures in a decisive move to remove disloyal members and prevent further defections, as the party prepares for the 2027 general elections.

A reliable source within the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), who spoke to NAIJABLOGDAILY on condition of anonymity, revealed that the party leadership is “deeply displeased” with the increasing wave of high-profile defections, especially from critical southern states.

“This is not business as usual,” the source stated. “When Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former governor Ifeanyi Okowa left, the party took legal steps to challenge their defection. That process is ongoing. As for Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, who defected on Saturday, the PDP will respond after the Sallah holiday.”

PDP Targets Structural Reform and Party Loyalty

  • The NWC reportedly believes the internal collapse of loyalty stems from the dominance of defected leaders’ loyalists holding sensitive positions in state and zonal offices. A full structural overhaul is now being planned to eliminate “political opportunists” and ensure only genuinely committed party members retain leadership roles.

“These defections damage our internal stability. The party must clean house. The South-South zone will be restructured so only loyal PDP members hold power. We can’t afford more sabotage from within,” the insider said.

The defections of Governors Oborevwori, Okowa, and most recently Umo Eno have dealt a major blow to the PDP’s strength in the South-South, a region previously regarded as one of its strongest political bases.

Timothy Osadolor: “Let the Disloyal Exit Quickly”

  • Reacting to the latest wave of defections, PDP Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, said disloyal figures should leave the party now, so loyal members can focus on rebuilding.
  • “No political party wants to lose top assets like sitting governors. But let them go. We need sincere patriots, not political merchants focused on survival and second terms,” Osadolor said.
  • He also criticized Governor Umo Eno, a cleric-turned-politician, for allegedly abandoning principles of service and compassion.

“Given his background, many expected compassion and truth in his governance style. Sadly, his focus seems to be political self-preservation, not the people’s welfare.”

2027 Elections: PDP Remains Hopeful Despite Setbacks

Despite the internal shakeup, Osadolor remains optimistic about the PDP’s chances in 2027, suggesting that the exodus of disloyal members could actually strengthen the party’s core.

“Those looking for transport fare to defect should come to Wadata Plaza, we’ll happily escort them out. It’s better they leave now than stay as saboteurs. True party believers are ready to rebuild.”

  • As the PDP continues to lose high-ranking members to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the party is gearing up for a restructuring phase that could redefine its future, especially in its once-dominant strongholds.
