ABUJA
The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) has dismissed allegations made by Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, accusing him of trying to manipulate public sentiment against Senator George Akume over the recent wave of insecurity in the Sankera axis of Benue State.
Governor Alia had, during a Channels Television appearance, suggested that Akume and his allies were silent on the escalating violence in the state, claiming to have a yet-to-be-released report implicating Abuja-based individuals in sponsoring the killings.

In a strongly-worded statement issued over the weekend, Terrence Kuanum, Special Adviser on Public Affairs to the SGF, refuted the claims, describing them as “misguided and misleading.”
“If the Governor expected the SGF to be on TV discussing his behind-the-scenes efforts, it either shows a lack of understanding of government procedures or an attempt to politicize a serious issue,” the statement read.
SGF Actively Involved Behind the Scenes – Kuanum
- Kuanum emphasized that Senator Akume has been deeply involved in security interventions, many of which are routed through the Federal Executive Council and other formal mechanisms of government.
- He reminded the governor that as a member of the Federal Security Council, Alia himself is aware of how security issues are handled at the national level.
“Several security interventions in Benue State have been driven through official channels in which the SGF is actively involved,” the statement noted.
Benue Lawmakers Also Defended
The SGF’s office also responded to Governor Alia’s remarks about certain Benue lawmakers being “cronies” of Akume. Kuanum pointed out that Senators Titus Zam and Emmanuel Udende, along with House members from Benue, have consistently raised the issue of insecurity in the National Assembly, resulting in federal-level action.
“These lawmakers have not been silent. Their motions have gotten the attention of the Federal Executive Council,” Kuanum stressed.
Challenge to Publish Indicting Report
Regarding the panel report mentioned by Governor Alia, the SGF’s office said proper procedure must be followed, including producing a White Paper, before such a report can be considered official.
“If the Governor has truly identified those behind the killings, let him forward the names to President Tinubu and the Federal Security Council immediately,” the statement urged.

The office also warned that making preemptive accusations without administrative or security clearance could jeopardize national security.
Call for Unity and Clarity
- In a tone of reconciliation, the SGF’s team advised Governor Alia to engage more with local communities and adopt a clear and inclusive strategy for tackling insecurity.
“The Governor must avoid contradicting himself on who is responsible for the violence—whether it’s foreign terrorists, locals, or others. A unified strategy is needed,” the statement advised.
Despite the dispute, the SGF reaffirmed his dedication to restoring peace in Benue State, stating that Akume remains committed both officially and personally to the well-being of his home state.
