Former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has expressed strong optimism that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will bounce back and reclaim its position as Nigeria’s leading opposition party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking to journalists in Ilorin, Kwara State, on Wednesday, Saraki, who currently serves as the Chairman of the PDP Reconciliation Committee, said the party remains the only viable opposition in Nigeria’s political space. He noted that despite some defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC), new members are also trooping into the PDP from rival parties.

“Some members might still defect to the APC,” Saraki admitted, “but we are also gaining members from other political parties. The movement is not one-sided.”
Saraki made the remarks during a visit to Ajikobi Ward in Ilorin West Local Government Area, shortly after revalidating his PDP membership. He emphasized that the PDP is focused on resolving its internal crises and strengthening its structures at both the national and grassroots levels.
“The only strong and credible opposition party today is the PDP,” Saraki stated. “Though there are challenges, I and many other leaders are working hard to reunite and rebuild the party. We’ve already held our National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and scheduled another for the end of the month. Between now and then, we’re doing a lot of groundwork.”
Saraki highlighted the growing dissatisfaction among Nigerians over the current state of governance, particularly issues such as insecurity, unemployment, poverty, and the lack of government presence in many communities. He believes these factors are contributing to renewed interest in the PDP at the grassroots level.
“People are tired of poor governance,” he said. “New members are joining daily, and our old members are reenergized. The enthusiasm at the grassroots is very encouraging.”
On the PDP’s 2027 prospects, the former Kwara State governor said:
“We started early, and we still have two years to prepare. Once we stabilize leadership at the top, we believe everything else will fall into place. I thank Nigerians for their patience and urge our party members to stay hopeful. We are doing everything we can to rescue the PDP and restore it as a formidable national force.”

Saraki reaffirmed his commitment to Nigeria’s democratic process, stressing the importance of a vibrant opposition in a healthy democracy.
“A thriving democracy depends on a strong opposition,” he concluded. “We are making both personal and collective sacrifices to reposition the PDP and bring hope back to Nigerians.”
