“Amaechi Is Hungry for Power, Not Food” – Wike Fires Back.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has slammed former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, accusing him of being desperate for political power and misleading Nigerians with his recent statement about hunger.

Wike made the remarks during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, reacting to Amaechi’s controversial comment during his 60th birthday celebration, where he stated, “We’re all hungry… if you’re not hungry, I am.”

Amaechi, a former Rivers State governor and long-time political rival of Wike, also suggested that opposition forces could “remove the man in power” — a statement Wike described as irresponsible and politically driven.

Wike: “From 1999 to 2023, He Never Complained of Hunger”

  • Blasting Amaechi’s comments, Wike questioned his credibility and motive:

“He was Speaker from 1999 to 2007, Governor from 2007 to 2015, and Minister from 2015 to 2023. At no point did he ever speak about hunger. Now, because he’s no longer in power, he suddenly claims to be hungry?”

Wike accused Amaechi of weaponizing the suffering of Nigerians for political gain and seeking to regroup with opposition elements to destabilize the current administration.

“They are regrouping because they are hungry for power — not food. That’s the real hunger. He joined Atiku and failed. From 1999 till 2023, he enjoyed power. Now that he’s out, he pretends to care about the masses.”

“He Can’t Even Deliver Rivers State”

The FCT Minister ridiculed Amaechi’s performance in national politics, saying he failed to deliver votes even as the Director General of Buhari’s campaign.

“He couldn’t secure 25% in Rivers for Buhari. Yet he talks about removing a president? How? Is it by military coup? The term ‘removal’ smells of dictatorship.”

Wike, who has been a vocal supporter of President Bola Tinubu, emphasized his own political relevance:

“I am not a liability; I am an asset to President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027. Love me or hate me, I get results.”

Amaechi’s Opposition Bloc: “Let Them Start From Rivers”

In a final jab, Wike challenged Amaechi and his allies to test their influence in Rivers State, a key battleground in southern Nigerian politics.

“Let them begin their coalition from Rivers. We’ll see how far they go. As for me, I stand for stability and development, not political drama.”
