Abuja Water Shortage: Wike Explains Cause, Promises Restoration Within Two Weeks.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has provided an update on the ongoing water shortage in Abuja and its surrounding satellite towns, attributing the issue to the ongoing rehabilitation of key water treatment plants.

In an official statement released on Sunday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the Minister revealed that Phases 1 and 2 of the FCT’s four major water treatment plants are currently undergoing critical upgrades. This has led to partial disruption of the water supply in parts of the Abuja city centre and nearby communities.

Wike assured FCT residents that the rehabilitation project is nearing completion and is expected to wrap up within two weeks. During this period, water supply will be rationed to ensure equitable distribution across the affected areas.

“The FCT Water Board operates four water treatment plants, each with a capacity of 30,000 cubic metres per hour. Due to inefficiencies and aging equipment, the plants are producing below their installed capacity,” the Minister explained.

He stated that Messrs SCC Nigeria Limited is handling the project, and that the rehabilitation work on Phases 1 and 2 has reached an advanced stage. The process includes the replacement and reinstallation of electro-mechanical equipment, which requires a complete shutdown of the two interconnected plants.

However, Phases 3 and 4 remain operational, though they are not sufficient to meet the high demand for potable water in Abuja. As a result, there is a partial, not total shutdown, affecting water pressure and availability in some parts of the FCT.

To reduce the impact, especially with the upcoming Salah celebration, Wike disclosed that the temporarily shut-down plants will be reactivated briefly to boost water supply during the festive period.

Additionally, the FCT Water Board has introduced a rationing schedule, alternating supply between Distribution Lines 1 and 2, and residents are advised to store water in advance for their daily needs.

Wike appealed for public understanding, emphasizing that the rehabilitation is aimed at long-term improvement of Abuja’s water supply infrastructure.
