A dark cloud has fallen over the Nigerian sports community as 20 members of the Kano State contingent to the National Sports Festival 2024 tragically lost their lives in a fatal road accident while returning from the event held in Ogun State.

The tragic crash reportedly occurred in Dakatsalle town, approximately 50 kilometres from the Kano metropolis. According to initial reports, the victims included athletes, journalists, medical personnel, and sports administrators who had participated in the Gateway 2024 National Sports Festival.

The Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kano chapter, Zahraddeen Saleh, confirmed the heartbreaking incident, calling it one of the saddest days in the history of Kano sports.

Also confirming the crash, the Kano State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mustapha Kwankwaso, expressed deep sorrow on behalf of the Kano State Government and the people of the state.

“This is a deeply painful moment for all of us. We are devastated by the news of the ghastly accident that occurred as our athletes were returning home after representing our great state with pride and commitment,” he said.

Kwankwaso added that those who sustained injuries in the Kano athletes’ crash are currently receiving medical treatment and are responding well. He commended the swift efforts of first responders and medical personnel.

The Commissioner reassured the public that the government will conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident and take appropriate action. He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to the safety and welfare of athletes and officials representing Kano at both national and international sporting events.
