Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Saturday, officially handed over brand-new 2025 SUV vehicles to the 18 local government chairmen across the state, as part of his administration’s effort to boost grassroots development and service delivery.
The vehicle commissioning ceremony was held at the State Secretariat in Benin City and attended by the Governor’s Deputy, Dennis Idahosa, and other top government officials.
Empowering Local Councils Without Interfering in Their Funds
Governor Okpebholo, while addressing the public, emphasized that the gesture was a commitment to strengthening local governance and ensuring that development reaches the grassroots level.
“These vehicles are not for private use. They are meant to support your duties and help you bring progress to your communities. I will personally monitor their use to ensure accountability,” he said.
He clarified that his administration has not interfered with local government funds, thereby giving the chairmen full autonomy to execute meaningful projects within their jurisdictions.
“We will assess the success of your administration based on how well you utilize your resources,” the Governor added.
First Time 2025 SUVs Are Procured for LG Chairmen in Edo
Commissioner for Local Government, Community, and Chieftaincy Affairs, Lucky Eseigbe, hailed the governor’s initiative, noting it was the first time in the state’s history that 2025 model SUVs were purchased for local government chairmen.
Eseigbe highlighted that the autonomy granted to the LGAs has already begun yielding results, with new blocks of classrooms, primary healthcare centers, road construction, and other infrastructural projects emerging across the state.

Edo Aiming to Compete with Lagos and Abuja in Development
Governor Okpebholo expressed confidence in the state’s future under the Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government, saying Edo will soon compete favorably with Lagos, Abuja, and other top-performing states in terms of development and infrastructure.
“New things are happening in Edo. We are on the path of transformation,” he declared.
The move marks a significant milestone in the Governor’s administration, reinforcing his vision to promote transparency, accountability, and grassroots development across the state.
