The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially released the timetable and schedule of activities for the upcoming Ekiti and Osun State governorship elections in 2026.

According to INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the Ekiti State governorship election is scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026, while the Osun State governorship election will hold on Saturday, August 8, 2026.

Yakubu made this announcement in Abuja during the swearing-in ceremony of six newly appointed Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) confirmed by the National Assembly.

  • Election Date: Saturday, June 20, 2026
  • Party Primaries: October 20 – November 10, 2025
  • Deadline for Nomination Forms Upload: 6:00 PM, December 22, 2025
  • Final List of Candidates: January 18, 2026
  • Start of Campaigns: January 21, 2026
  • End of Campaigns: 24 hours before election day

INEC Election Timetable for Osun State

  • Election Date: Saturday, August 8, 2026
  • Party Primaries: November 24 – December 15, 2025
  • Deadline for Nomination Forms Upload: 6:00 PM, February 9, 2026
  • Final List of Candidates: March 9, 2026
  • Start of Campaigns: March 11, 2026
  • End of Campaigns: 24 hours before election day

INEC emphasized that the timelines comply with the Electoral Act 2022, which mandates election notices be published at least 360 days before the poll date. The full schedule is available on INEC’s official website and social media platforms.

Redeployment of Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs)

  • Prof. Yakubu also announced the deployment of new RECs to various states:
  • Sa’ad Idris – Gombe
  • Johnson Sinikiem – Cross River
  • Feyijimi Ibiyemi – Ogun
  • Mukhtar Gajiram – Taraba
  • Chukwuemeka Ibeziako – Abia
  • Umar Garba – Sokoto

He stressed that the redeployment is a routine administrative exercise aimed at enhancing election preparation and administration across the country.

Preparations for Bye-Elections and Continuous Voter Registration (CVR)

Yakubu addressed public concerns regarding pending bye-elections and the resumption of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR). He confirmed that preparations are nearly complete, especially in light of the upcoming Anambra governorship election. The number of pending bye-elections has now risen to 17, with full details to be announced soon.
