The Court of Appeal in Abuja has affirmed the election of Monday Okpebholo as the duly elected Governor of Edo State, bringing an end to the legal challenge filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo.
Delivering the unanimous judgment on Thursday, May 29, 2025, Justice Mohammed Danjuma, who led the three-member panel, ruled that the appeal lacked merit and upheld the earlier verdict of the Edo State Election Petition Tribunal, which had also dismissed the petition.

The court emphasized that the appellants, PDP and Ighodalo, failed to prove any miscarriage of justice or substantial non-compliance with the Electoral Act in the September 21, 2024, governorship poll conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Justice Danjuma stated that the evidence provided was insufficient to overturn the tribunal’s earlier decision.
“The appeal is devoid of merit and stands dismissed,” he ruled.
This judgment solidifies Okpebholo’s mandate as Edo governor under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
