President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to shift from promises to concrete action that benefits the people, especially the youth and women of the region.
Speaking on Wednesday at the ECOWAS 50th Anniversary Celebration in Lagos, Tinubu, who currently serves as the Chairman of ECOWAS, acknowledged the progress made in regional trade, peacekeeping, and integration. However, he stressed the urgent need for better implementation of key initiatives.
“We are lagging behind on implementation,” Tinubu said.
“Let our citizens feel the real impact of our shared efforts.”
He emphasized the importance of empowering the next generation through increased access to education, business opportunities, and leadership roles.
“We must mentor them. Their success is the key to the future,” he said.
“We want to hand a banner without stain to you, the youth of West Africa.”
Tinubu paid tribute to General Yakubu Gowon (retd.), the only surviving founding father of ECOWAS, and praised the early visionaries who united West African nations across linguistic and cultural divides. He acknowledged the strides made in regional cooperation, including the free movement of citizens between member states.
Despite these achievements, Tinubu noted that the region still faces pressing challenges such as:
- Insecurity
- Food shortages
- Poor policy implementation
- Economic instability

He pledged Nigeria’s continued support to member states through initiatives like the Technical Aid Corps, which deploys skilled professionals to assist in development efforts across the region.
Tinubu also expressed support for new ECOWAS initiatives, such as:
The Infrastructure Master Plan
The Ecogo digital platform — aimed at boosting digital integration and modernization
“Let us imagine a West Africa where our economies thrive through joint effort… where our people, diverse yet bound by destiny, work together towards peace, prosperity, and justice,” Tinubu concluded.
