The Nigerian Senate has passed a resolution to classify kidnapping as an act of terrorism, recommending that the Terrorism Act be amended to impose the death penalty for convicted kidnappers.
Under the proposed amendment, once a kidnapping conviction is confirmed, the maximum sentence of death would automatically apply.
Nigeria continues to grapple with a persistent security crisis, as bandit gangs and terrorist groups carry out attacks that include village raids, killings, and abductions for ransom. In response, President Bola Tinubu recently ordered a full security cordon over forests in Kwara State to combat these threats.
Recent Mass Abductions
- In Kwara State, 11 residents of the Isapa community in the Ekiti Local Government Area were abducted.
- Two weeks prior, 38 worshippers were kidnapped from a Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State.
- In Niger State, St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools, Papiri, saw over 300 students and staff kidnapped amid a resurgence of mass abductions.

- Kebbi State reported the kidnapping of 24 schoolgirls from Government Comprehensive Girls Secondary School, Maga; fortunately, they were released safely.
At least 50 children from St. Mary’s Catholic School have escaped captivity, but over 265 students and teachers remain in detention.
The resolution comes in the shadow of Nigeria’s high-profile Chibok schoolgirls kidnapping in 2014, when 276 girls were abducted by Boko Haram. More than a decade later, many of them are still missing.
By classifying kidnapping as terrorism and enforcing the death penalty, the Senate aims to deter kidnappers and strengthen national security measures across the country.
