South African global sensation Tyla has clinched the Favourite Afrobeats Artist award at the 2025 American Music Awards (AMAs), defeating Nigerian stars Wizkid, Rema, Tems, and Asake.
The prestigious event took place Monday night at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas, where Tyla was recognised for her continued global impact with hits like “Water.” Her win further cements her status as one of Africa’s biggest exports in recent years.
Wizkid, Tems Miss Out
Wizkid, who made history by winning the inaugural Favourite Afrobeats Artist award at the AMAs in 2022, was among the frontrunners, but Tyla’s global momentum proved too strong. Nigerian fans also hoped for a win for Rema, Tems, or Asake, but the award slipped through to South Africa.
Billie Eilish Dominates the Night
Pop star Billie Eilish emerged the night’s biggest winner, sweeping seven awards, including:
Artist of the Year
- Album of the Year (HIT ME HARD AND SOFT)
- Song of the Year (BIRDS OF A FEATHER)
Meanwhile, Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande were the evening’s biggest snubs, losing in all their nominated categories.
