The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has inducted 349 foreign-trained medical and dental practitioners into the Nigerian health sector during a ceremony held on Tuesday in Abuja.

According to the Council, all inducted practitioners successfully passed the MDCN assessment examinations, qualifying them to receive full certification to practise medicine and dentistry in Nigeria. Out of the 349 inducted, 340 are medical doctors, and nine are dentists.

The MDCN said the induction reflects its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare workforce and ensuring that medical practice in the country meets global professional standards. The Council noted that integrating foreign-trained doctors helps boost service delivery, uphold ethics, and maintain quality health care across the nation.

Speaking at the event, the MDCN Registrar, Dr. Fatima Kyari, urged the newly inducted doctors to maintain the highest ethical standards and take their housemanship training seriously, describing it as the foundation of their medical careers.

She said:

  • “Parents, please allow your children to complete their housemanship. This one year is a very important foundational aspect of their training. They will be the first line of care, under consultant supervision, and they will learn a lot. Housemanship remains a foundation they will build on even years later.”

Kyari also encouraged the doctors to serve patients with dignity and contribute positively to society. She acknowledged that Nigerian doctors are highly sought after globally due to their resilience and training, but emphasized the need to retain talent within the country.

She warned that the Council would apply strict disciplinary actions for professional or ethical misconduct, explaining that offenders face investigation by the Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigating Panel and, where necessary, the Disciplinary Tribunal, which has the authority to issue sanctions ranging from warnings and suspension to full erasure of practising certificates.

Kyari added that being a doctor goes beyond financial gain, stressing that the profession demands compassion, knowledge, and commitment to helping people during their most vulnerable moments.

The President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Prof. Bala Audu, also addressed the inductees, reminding them that the medical profession carries a significant responsibility to protect lives and uphold strict ethical standards.

He highlighted the need for doctors to remain team players, recognise their limitations, seek help when needed, and maintain discipline both in their professional duties and personal lives.
According to him, the practice of medicine is a leadership and service-driven calling, requiring doctors to balance roles as both leaders and learners throughout their careers.
