Nigerian Speaker Withdraws Mandatory Voting Bill Amid Controversy.

ABUJA, Nigeria—The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has officially withdrawn the controversial bill to make voting compulsory for all eligible Nigerians.

The Compulsory Voting Bill, which aimed to amend the Electoral Act 2022, was withdrawn on Monday following public backlash and legal concerns. The decision was confirmed in a statement issued by the Speaker’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi.

Speaker Cites Stakeholder Consultations

“Following extensive consultations with a broad spectrum of stakeholders, the Speaker has decided to withdraw the bill co-sponsored with Hon. Daniel Adama Ago,” the statement read.

It noted that the move is aimed at allowing further dialogue on how best to encourage voter participation without infringing on the democratic rights of citizens.

“This withdrawal will allow time for further dialogue on how best to cultivate a culture of voluntary participation that honours both our democratic ideals and the rights of our citizens,” Krishi added.

Bill Faced Legal and Civil Criticism

NAIJABLOGDAILY recalls that the bill, which passed second reading in mid-May, sparked immediate criticism from civil society groups and legal experts.

Renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), was among those who strongly criticised the proposal, describing it as undemocratic and a violation of fundamental rights.

Legal analysts also questioned the practicality and constitutionality of penalising citizens for non-participation in elections, citing the right to freedom of choice and expression.

What’s Next?

While the bill has now been withdrawn, the conversation around improving voter turnout remains relevant. Nigeria has faced consistently low voter turnout in recent elections, a concern for democratic stakeholders.

Observers say the focus should now shift to voter education, trust in the electoral system, and reform efforts to make elections more transparent and inclusive.
