The United Kingdom has reportedly declined the Nigerian government’s request to have former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu transferred back to Nigeria to complete his prison term.
Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, and their associate Dr. Obinna Obeta, were convicted in the UK for trafficking a young man to London with the intention of harvesting his kidney for a transplant meant for Ekweremadu’s daughter, Sonia.
According to a source within the UK Ministry of Justice quoted by The Guardian (UK), the British authorities turned down the request because they are uncertain about how the Nigerian government would handle the case if Ekweremadu were repatriated.

A UK government spokesperson told the newspaper that all prisoner transfers are strictly discretionary and must undergo a thorough assessment to determine if approving such a move serves the interests of justice.
Another official reportedly added that the UK has a firm stance on modern slavery and human trafficking, insisting that anyone found guilty of such crimes must face the full consequences under UK law.
The decision highlights the UK’s concern over legal, procedural, and human rights issues surrounding prisoner transfers to Nigeria, especially in high-profile cases.
