Nnamdi Kanu Rejects Life Sentence, Demands Justice Review, Thanks Supporters — Brother, Kanunta.

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has rejected the life imprisonment sentence slammed on him by a Federal High Court, insisting that the judgment has no legal foundation. His brother, Kanunta Kanu, revealed this after a visit to the Sokoto Medium Security Prison, where Kanu was recently transferred.

Kanunta confirmed that Prince Emmanuel Kanu and Dr. Maxwell Opara met with the IPOB leader following his relocation from the Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja to a correctional centre in Sokoto State.

Kanu Rejects Verdict, Says Law Used Against Him Was Repealed

Kanu told his family that his conviction lacked legitimacy because no individual can be lawfully convicted under a repealed law. He also said his right to a fair hearing was violated, alleging that:

His final written address was ignored.

  • The “evidence” cited by the court was not part of the charge sheet and not formally tendered.
  • The judge relied on struck-out charges previously dismissed by Justice Binta Nyako.
  • Kanunta noted that Kanu identified “numerous errors” within the judgment which, according to him, undermined the entire trial.
  • Disparity With Earlier Rulings

Kanu questioned why earlier favourable decisions from:

  • Umuahia High Court,
  • Enugu Appeal Court,
  • The United Nations, and
  • The Supreme Court,

were ignored—especially those affirming that the laws used to charge him had already been repealed.

He urged Nigerian justices, magistrates, and lawyers to examine the ruling and uphold the constitution.

“Injustice to One Is Injustice to All”

Kanu also conveyed a message to his supporters:

  • “I am Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. I will always reject injustice, unfairness, and evil against anybody—regardless of tribe, faith, or background.”

He expressed deep gratitude for the prayers and solidarity, saying:

  • “Injustice to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is injustice everywhere. I remain thankful for your support. Elohim bless you all.”

Background of the Judgment

Kanu was sentenced to life imprisonment over terrorism-related charges linked to the enforcement of the “sit-at-home” order in the South-East. The court ruled that the directive was implemented through threats and violence.

He also received additional 20-year and 5-year concurrent sentences on other counts. The court avoided the death penalty due to global concerns over capital punishment.

Justice Kolawole Omotosho, in his ruling, described Kanu as “arrogant, cocky, and full of himself,” claiming that his broadcasts contributed to regional insecurity, including the killing of ex-presidential aide Ahmed Gulak.

Kanu’s trial has drawn both national and international scrutiny, with critics alleging political interference, selective prosecution, and human rights violations.
