Nollywood actress and media personality Toke Makinwa has sparked conversations online after advising nursing mothers not to bathe their newborns every day, claiming that excessive bathing can damage a baby’s delicate skin.
In a video shared on her social media page, the 40-year-old new mother explained that babies are naturally clean because “the womb they came from is not dirty.”
“Babies Don’t Need Daily Baths” — Toke Makinwa
Makinwa revealed that she does not bathe her own baby daily, stressing that newborns do not get dirty enough to warrant constant washing.
She said:
“I really think bathing babies actually causes problems. Babies are not dirty. They have been inside the womb for nine months. Inside the womb is not dirty.”

She added that a baby’s fragile skin can be irritated by daily bathing:
- “Babies are not on the floor; they are not dirty or sweaty. So why are you excessively putting water on their skin? Their skin is fragile. You can wipe them instead of bathing them every day.”
According to her, daily wiping is sufficient and helps maintain a newborn’s natural skin balance.
Mixed Reactions Trail Her Advice
Makinwa’s comments have triggered a wave of online debate. While some mothers agreed with her approach, many others questioned her experience and medical expertise, arguing that only pediatricians or nurses should give such advice.
The conversation continues to grow as Nigerians share personal experiences and cultural beliefs about newborn care.
