The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi over his recent remarks concerning the conviction of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
NaijaBlogDaily recalls that Obi described Kanu’s arrest, detention, and sentencing as “unfortunate,” stressing that the situation exposed leadership lapses and could escalate tensions rather than calm them. His comments were contained in a statement titled “Kanu’s Conviction: Obi Calls for Dialogue, Healing Over Hostility,” released by his media aide, Ibrahim Umar.
Reacting on Sunday, APC Lagos spokesman Seye Oladejo faulted Obi’s remarks, insisting it was inappropriate for political figures to comment on matters still under judicial consideration.
Oladejo cautioned that such statements could be perceived as challenging national security institutions or judicial processes. He stressed that Obi’s comments risked politicizing a highly sensitive security issue and could further inflame public emotions.

He added that discussions around national security must remain balanced, responsible, and respectful of judicial outcomes, while leaving room for necessary appeals and lawful dialogue.
Reiterating the Federal Government’s stance, Oladejo noted that authorities remain committed to handling issues involving terrorism, treason, and national stability strictly within the framework of the law and the constitution.
He urged Nigerians to view Obi’s comments within the wider political context and to exercise restraint, emphasizing the need for responsible public communication on national concerns.
