Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has identified the longstanding neglect of Nigeria’s education sector as a major driver of insecurity and systemic decay across the country.
Atiku made the remarks on Saturday in Yola, Adamawa State, while speaking at the 17th Annual Founder’s Day of the American University of Nigeria.
According to him, the “crass disregard for education” by the current and previous administrations since 2007 has turned what should have been a promising future for the nation into a bleak reality.

He stressed that although Nigeria faces visible insecurity from armed groups, the deeper and more dangerous threat is the consistent underinvestment in education, healthcare, and human development.
Atiku warned that ignoring these sectors not only worsens the present situation but also endangers the country’s long-term stability and growth. He noted that the nation’s large youth population, if not properly educated or engaged, becomes vulnerable to criminal recruitment.

Highlighting the country’s alarming educational statistics, Atiku lamented that millions of Nigerian children remain out of school, while many who manage to enrol are trapped in an outdated and ineffective system.
He added that Nigeria now holds the unfortunate record of having the highest number of out-of-school children in the world.
Atiku called on stakeholders, especially individuals and the private sector, to pay closer attention to the state of Nigeria’s education system, stressing that the country’s future depends on the quality of investment made in its young population today.
