Labour Party (LP) 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi has described the arrest, detention, and conviction of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), as “unfortunate” and a reflection of leadership failure.
In a statement titled “Kanu’s Conviction: Obi Calls for Dialogue, Healing Over Hostility” issued on Saturday by his media aide, Ibrahim Umar, Obi said the handling of Kanu’s case risks heightening tensions rather than reducing them.
He stressed that the concerns raised by Kanu were neither unheard of nor unsolvable and required wisdom, empathy, and genuine engagement. Obi argued that in functional societies, grievances are addressed through dialogue, reforms, and inclusive governance, rather than coercion.
- “Coercion becomes necessary only when reason has been exhausted. In this case, reason was not fully explored, if at all,” he said.
Obi also pointed out that leadership often demands more than rigid legal processes, citing international examples where political solutions, negotiated settlements, and even amnesty are used when legal measures alone threaten national stability.

He likened the government’s approach to “a man trapped in a hole who continues digging instead of seeking a way out,” warning that such actions deepen mistrust and worsen the country’s challenges.
Calling for calm, Obi urged the Presidency, Council of State, and respected statesmen to work towards sustainable peace, emphasising healing over hostility, reconciliation over retaliation, and dialogue over division.
He concluded on a hopeful note, saying that peace and reconciliation are achievable if Nigeria chooses the path of justice, fairness, and compassion.
