The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute Metta, Lagos, has raised serious concerns about the crippling cost of electricity, revealing that it spends N20 million monthly despite receiving just 3 hours of public power supply daily.
The startling revelation was made by the outgoing Medical Director, Dr. Adedamola Dada, during a media briefing where he outlined the hospital’s achievements and major operational challenges over his seven-year tenure.
“We are the only federal public hospital that receives just two to three hours of electricity daily,” he said. “Yet, we have been generating 22 to 24 hours of electricity daily on our own to keep critical medical services running.”
Powering Healthcare with 80,000 Litres of Diesel
To sustain 24-hour operations, FMC Ebute Metta relies heavily on diesel-powered generators, consuming an estimated 80,000 litres of diesel every month.
Dr. Dada stressed that the hospital’s switch to fully automated medical services left it with no choice but to provide uninterrupted power to support life-saving equipment and patient care.
“When we began automating our services, many doubted our capacity to run without public electricity. But we developed a power delivery plan that now covers 95% of our electricity needs.”
He admitted the approach has been financially draining, but insisted it was vital for safety, efficiency, and healthcare delivery.
Recognition Despite Challenges
Despite these operational burdens, FMC Ebute Metta has continued to thrive. The hospital was recognised in 2022 by the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) as the most compliant and standard health facility in Lagos State.
The Bureau of Public Service Reforms under the Presidency also acknowledged it as one of Nigeria’s leading institutions in ICT deployment across the public health sector.
Call for Support
Dr. Dada’s revelations underline a broader national crisis in healthcare infrastructure. He called on the government and relevant stakeholders to invest in sustainable energy solutions, like solar power, to support public hospitals struggling with electricity.
