Sultan of Sokoto Raises Alarm Over Worsening Insecurity in Northern Nigeria.

Kaduna, May 10, 2025 — The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has voiced serious concern over the escalating insecurity in Northern Nigeria, warning that the crisis has reached a critical and dangerous level.

Speaking at the joint meeting of the Northern States Governors Forum (NSGF) and the Northern Traditional Rulers Council (NTRC) held in Kaduna, the Sultan emphasized the need for urgent collective action and unity among Northern leaders to confront the region’s growing security threats.

“Insecurity has become one of the biggest challenges threatening our region,” the Sultan declared. “We must rise above personal and political interests to work together and secure the future of our people.”

He stressed that unity remains essential to defeating terrorism, banditry, and communal clashes ravaging various parts of the North. The Sultan also urged Northern leaders to address the root causes of unrest, particularly poverty, economic hardship, and lack of opportunities for youth.

“Our people are suffering. Without addressing poverty and inequality, we cannot achieve sustainable peace or unity,” he added.

The Kaduna summit brought together key political and traditional leaders from across the North, including Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, who joined others in deliberating on security, development, and regional cooperation.

Gombe State Governor and NSGF Chairman, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, called for intensified security strategies and meaningful interventions to solve long-standing issues like the Almajiri system, youth unemployment, and poor access to education.

The Sultan’s statement adds weight to the growing call for a comprehensive regional security roadmap, with stronger collaboration between government, traditional institutions, and communities.

As insecurity continues to affect lives and livelihoods across the North, stakeholders at the meeting agreed that the time for speeches is over—what is needed now is decisive and united action.
