In a deepening political crisis in Zamfara State, a faction of the Zamfara State House of Assembly has elected Hon. Bashar Aliyu Gummi as its Speaker, openly challenging Governor Dauda Lawal and alleging acts of political intimidation and abuse of power.
The faction, which claims to have been sidelined by the current state administration, declared its intention to continue legislative duties despite what they described as persecution from the state government. The group made this known in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Hon. Aliyu Ango Kagara, who represents Talata Mafara South Constituency.
“No amount of intimidation from the state government, including politically motivated court rulings, can derail our mission and leadership,” the lawmakers stated.
They accused the Governor Lawal-led administration of backing another faction, led by Hon. Bilyaminu Moriki, which allegedly suspended several lawmakers over a year ago without due legal process.

The faction revealed that it has petitioned both state and federal security agencies over what it described as threats, illegal suspensions, and a coordinated plan to attack its members and families. The group also criticized the state government’s alleged manipulation of the judiciary, citing a controversial arrest order issued by Justice Halima Jaafar Mikaila, which they claim contains errors and questionable intent.
Despite an ongoing case at the Appeal Court in Sokoto, the lawmakers allege that the state government rushed to obtain the questionable arrest order, bypassing due process.
“Our resolve to uphold the rule of law and defend our legislative mandate remains firm. We are not afraid of the threats, and we won’t be silenced,” the statement added.
