Justice for Bamise: Lagos BRT Driver Sentenced to Death by Hanging.

A Lagos State High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square has sentenced Andrew Nice Ominikoron, a driver with the Lagos Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, to death by hanging for the murder of Bamise Ayanwola, a 22-year-old fashion designer.

Justice Sherifat Sonaike delivered the judgment on Friday, bringing closure to a case that sparked nationwide outrage in 2022.

Ominikoron, along with accomplices still at large, was charged with conspiracy, rape, and murder following the brutal killing of Bamise, who went missing after boarding a BRT bus he operated in February 2022.

After boarding the bus, Bamise never made it to her destination. Her lifeless, unclothed body was later discovered by the roadside, triggering public protests and demands for justice.

The police subsequently arrested Ominikoron, and the Lagos State Government charged him in court. Despite pleading not guilty, he was found guilty of the crimes after a thorough trial.

“Justice has finally been served,” said observers following the high-profile case. “This verdict sends a strong message that crimes against women will not go unpunished.”

The case highlighted concerns over public transport safety, especially for women, and led to calls for better passenger surveillance, driver vetting, and emergency response systems within the BRT network.

Ominikoron’s sentencing marks a landmark ruling in the fight for justice for gender-based violence victims in Nigeria.
