Former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has revealed that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is making plans to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Okowa, who was Atiku’s running mate in the 2023 presidential race under the PDP, made this known during an interview on Arise News. This comes shortly after Okowa officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), signaling further cracks within the PDP’s structure.
Recall that on March 20, 2023, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, among others, formed a political coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections. The move has sparked debates over a possible united opposition front.

Speaking on the state of the PDP, Okowa admitted regret over supporting a northern candidate in the last election instead of aligning with southern sentiment. He said, “Even during our campaigns, I sensed that our people were not in support of another northerner emerging as president. But the decision had already been made at the national level of the PDP.”

Reflecting on the 2023 Delta State governorship election, Okowa said the victory of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori shows the people still trust in his leadership and political decisions.
On whether he informed Atiku of his move to leave the PDP, Okowa revealed: “I did communicate with him about the series of stakeholders’ meetings we held. From my conversations with him, I can confirm that Atiku is already on his way out of the PDP. Nigerians should expect major political realignments ahead of 2027.”
With the 2027 elections fast approaching, Okowa’s defection and Atiku’s potential exit from the PDP further highlight the deepening political realignments that may shape the future of Nigeria’s democracy.
