Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has raised a serious alarm over the regrouping of Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists in parts of the Lake Chad region and the Mandara Hills within the Sambisa Forest.
Speaking in Maiduguri on Friday during a visit by the Minister of Defence, Badaru Abubakar, and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, Governor Zulum warned that the insurgent groups are gaining international support and breeding freely in the Tumbus waterways of Lake Chad.
Zulum stated:
“We conduct military operations, but after some time, we disengage, and Boko Haram and ISWAP return to reclaim those areas.”
He lamented that despite years of military action, the critical Tumbus areas have never been fully secured:
“The Tumbus have remained a breeding ground for terrorists where they find money, livelihoods, and resources.”
Highlighting the dangers posed by porous borders across the Sahel, Zulum stressed that terrorists from other regions also return to Lake Chad for survival.
“ISWAP and Boko Haram are receiving international support. Our porous borders make infiltration easy, and this remains a major challenge.”

Experts Raise Fresh Concerns
Zulum’s warning comes just days after a top security analyst, Bulama Bukarti of the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, warned that Boko Haram is gaining popularity on platforms like TikTok, raising fears of renewed radicalization online.
Also, Senator Ali Ndume of Borno South revealed that within six months, Boko Haram attacks led to the deaths of about 100 soldiers and 280 civilians, underlining the growing threat.
