Amid widespread speculations of political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Special Assistant on Electronic Media to the suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, Jerry Omatsogunwa, has firmly stated that Fubara remains a committed member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Omatsogunwa made the clarification on Wednesday, following reports from Arise News alleging that Governor Fubara, along with Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and Akwa Ibom’s Umo Eno, were planning to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“I doubt if the governor is even aware of the rumoured defection,” Omatsogunwa said in an interview with DAILY POST. “As of today, April 24, 2025, 9:46 am, Governor Fubara is still a bona fide member of the PDP.”
Governor Fubara Still Holds Key Position in PDP
Omatsogunwa further emphasized that Governor Fubara is not only a PDP member but currently serves as the Deputy Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum — a clear sign of his ongoing commitment to the party.
“We are still members of the PDP, and nothing has changed. The governor has not talked about defection at any time,” he added.
London Meeting with Tinubu?
When asked about the rumoured weekend meeting between President Bola Tinubu and Governor Fubara in London, Omatsogunwa did not confirm or deny the meeting but said such engagement would be a positive step toward resolving tensions in Rivers State.
“Only one state out of 36 cannot be under emergency rule with strangers ruling the people,” he said.
State of Emergency in Rivers State Still Unconstitutional – Omatsogunwa
He criticized the state of emergency declared by President Tinubu on March 18, which led to the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the entire Rivers State House of Assembly.
The aide insisted that Rivers State is peaceful, pointing out that the federal-appointed administrator admitted there was no crisis in the state.
“Even the sole administrator said in his maiden broadcast that there’s no crisis here,” Omatsogunwa noted. “So why declare a state of emergency here?”

He further accused Ibas, a political figure close to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, of attempting to install loyalists as sole administrators across the 23 local government areas — a move that has sparked public protests in Port Harcourt.
The state of emergency has since drawn heavy criticism from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), civil society organizations, and citizens of Rivers State, who consider the action unconstitutional and politically motivated.
