Insecurity: Nigeria Under Siege – CBCN President Lucius Ugorji Cries Out.

The President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), Most Reverend Lucius Ugorji, has declared that Nigeria is currently under siege due to the worsening insecurity ravaging the nation.

In his 2025 Easter message delivered in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, Archbishop Ugorji lamented the rising spate of kidnappings, killings, and general lawlessness, which he said have left Nigerians feeling helpless and unsafe in their own country.

“No Place is Safe in Nigeria” – Ugorji

“We are celebrating Easter this year in an atmosphere that breathes pessimism and despair,” he said. “The general insecurity of life and property is heightened by the rising wave of kidnapping for ransom, and the mindless slaughtering of innocent citizens by criminal gangs.”

The respected cleric went on to describe Nigeria as a “nation under siege,” stating that nowhere is safe anymore—not homes, highways, places of business, or even churches and religious centres.

Government’s Failure and Rising Self-Defense

Archbishop Ugorji blamed the federal government for its lack of political will in tackling the criminality plaguing the nation. According to him, the failure of leadership is now forcing citizens to take laws into their own hands to defend their lives and livelihoods.

This bold message comes at a time when multiple violent attacks and mass killings have shaken the country, particularly in the North-Central region.

Rising Death Toll in Benue and Plateau States

In Benue State, Governor Hyacinth Alia confirmed that 55 people were recently killed by bandits in attacks on Logo and Ukum Local Government Areas.

Meanwhile, in Plateau State, Governor Caleb Mutfwang urged residents of Zilkke village in Bassa LGA to stay alert and defend their communities, following deadly attacks by suspected herdsmen.
