Drama in Bauchi: Deputy Governor Jatau Reportedly Slaps Foreign Affairs Minister Tuggar at Emir’s Palace.

There was serious drama in Bauchi State on Friday as Deputy Governor Auwal Jatau allegedly slapped Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, during a heated exchange at the Emir’s Palace.

The shocking altercation happened during the turbaning ceremony of former Bauchi Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar, who was honoured as Makama Babba 1 of Bauchi Emirate. The grand event also marked the wedding of his daughter, Khadija Mohammed, and was attended by top dignitaries, including Vice President Kashim Shettima and Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.

Eyewitnesses say the incident stemmed from remarks made by Minister Tuggar, who allegedly criticized the Governor Bala Mohammed-led administration. This reportedly provoked an angry reaction from Deputy Governor Jatau, leading to the alleged slap.

“The Deputy Governor was clearly furious. It shocked everyone. If not for the Vice President’s quick move, it could’ve gotten out of hand,” a witness told Naija Blog Daily.

This clash highlights the deep political rift between Minister Tuggar and Governor Bala Mohammed. Tuggar, known for his open opposition to the PDP-led Bauchi government, has previously accused the governor of leveraging President Bola Tinubu’s tax reforms for personal political gain.

In a January interview on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics, Tuggar alleged: “Governor Bala Mohammed showed clearly that he did not have any sincerity of purpose. He used the tax bill debate to jumpstart his presidential campaign.”

Responding, Chief of Staff Aminu Gamawa slammed Tuggar’s remarks as “opportunistic and undiplomatic,” accusing the minister of using attacks to boost his own 2027 gubernatorial ambitions.

He added: “Tuggar’s absentee politics and poor foreign affairs performance have weakened Nigeria’s diplomatic influence, especially within Africa.”

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Bauchi State Government nor the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an official statement regarding the altercation.
