Top officials from the Donald Trump administration could be facing criminal contempt charges after allegedly violating a U.S. federal court order that halted the deportation of Venezuelan migrants.
According to a report by Reuters, U.S. District Judge James Boasberg ruled on Wednesday that there is “probable cause” to hold Trump-era officials in criminal contempt. The ruling stems from the willful disregard of a March 15 court order that stopped the removal of alleged Venezuelan gang members under the Alien Enemies Act.
Despite the order, two planes carrying the migrants had already taken off for El Salvador and were not recalled, raising serious legal concerns.

“The Court does not reach such conclusion lightly or hastily; indeed, it has given Defendants ample opportunity to rectify or explain their actions,” Boasberg stated. “None of their responses has been satisfactory.”
While the Trump administration has not yet issued an official response, Judge Boasberg noted that they would be allowed to “purge” the contempt before facing possible criminal prosecution.

He recommended that the administration allow the deported Venezuelan migrants to challenge their removal in court, even without returning them to the United States. The government, he added, could propose alternative methods to comply with the court’s order.
This development adds another layer to the ongoing legal scrutiny surrounding the Trump-era immigration policies and could have significant political and legal consequences.
