Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, has shared fresh insights into his political journey, revealing that it took him a full year to decide to join the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in 2013. Soludo made the statement on Wednesday in Awka, during a ceremony welcoming 15,000 former members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who officially defected to APGA.
The governor, who is now the national leader of APGA, described the party as more than a political platform—it is a grassroots movement for progressive governance in Anambra State and beyond.

“The first political party I joined was the PDP and I was the flag bearer in the 2010 governorship election in Anambra. During that time, I worked with many of you,” Soludo said.
“It took me one year to decide to join APGA in 2013. When I eventually did, I was disqualified as a governorship candidate, but I stayed on because I knew this was my last bus stop.”
APGA: A Movement, Not Just a Party
Governor Soludo emphasized that APGA, which was registered in 2002, is Nigeria’s first true progressive party and has since become a symbol of equality, unity, and grassroots empowerment.
“APGA is a movement in Anambra. Here, everybody is equal and no one is left behind,” he said.
He encouraged all new members to register at their respective ward levels and take part in the party’s cooperative programs designed to economically empower members across communities.

Speaking at the defection event, APGA State Chairman, Mr. Ifeatu Obi-Okoye, officially welcomed the new members and praised Governor Soludo’s transformational leadership for attracting people from other political camps.

“Governor Soludo’s leadership has changed the political landscape of Anambra. He is building a legacy of inclusive governance,” Obi-Okoye noted.
Former PDP State Chairman, Mr. Chukwudi Umeaba, who led the defectors, said their decision to collapse PDP into APGA was inspired by Soludo’s people-focused policies.
“We’re joining the winning team. Our goal is to support the governor in achieving his development vision for Anambra State,” Umeaba declared.
