Top figures of the Labour Party (LP), including Peter Obi and Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, on Wednesday stormed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja, demanding the recognition of Nenadi Usman as the party’s legitimate national chair.
This development follows the recent Supreme Court ruling that set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal, which had recognized Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the party.
Supreme Court Declares Appeal Meritorious
The apex court, in a unanimous judgment, ruled that the Appeal Court lacked jurisdiction to decide on the leadership tussle within the Labour Party. The judgment was delivered by Justice Inyang Okoro, and it emphasized the need for political parties to respect their own constitutions.
Reading from the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the ruling, Governor Otti noted:
“The first respondent, Labour Party under Abure, being an offshoot of the same judgment, is hereby dismissed… If the constitution of a political party prescribes tenure, such officer should be humble enough to step aside when due.”
The court’s decision effectively supported the appeal brought by Senator Ester Usman and others, while dismissing the counter-appeal filed by the Abure faction.
Labour Party Demands INEC Compliance
Addressing INEC officials, Peter Obi and Otti insisted that INEC must comply with the Supreme Court verdict by recognizing Nenadi Usman as the rightful national leader of the Labour Party.
They were received by INEC National Commissioner, Sam Olumekun, who assured that the commission would review the legal documents and respond accordingly.

Why This Matters
The leadership struggle within the LP has created significant tension in recent months, affecting party unity and preparations for future elections. Obi and Otti’s public show of support for Usman signals a potential power shift and realignment within the Labour Party.
Political watchers are now waiting to see whether INEC will officially update its records to reflect Usman as the National Chairman.
