Abuja, Nigeria – Suspended Senator for Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has filed a N5 billion defamation lawsuit against fellow lawmaker Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi for making damaging claims about her personal life during a live interview.
Filed through her legal team led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), M.J. Numa, Akpoti-Uduaghan alleges that Nwaebonyi made false and malicious claims on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily program on March 6, 2025, calling her a “gold digger,” “habitual liar,” and “habitual blackmailer”.
The lawmaker further alleged that Nwaebonyi claimed she had six children with different men, and that her marriage to Chief Emmanuel Uduaghan was under duress.
“These statements were broadcast nationally and rebroadcast across multiple online and social media platforms, thus ensuring wide publication,” her legal filing stated.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan told the High Court of the FCT that the remarks caused severe emotional distress, reputational damage, and embarrassment, especially as they were made without any lawful justification.
She claims the comments were part of a deliberate campaign to discredit her and justify her six-month suspension from the Senate.
“The defendant made those false and reckless statements to prejudice the public against my petition before the Senate,” she said.
Demands in the Suit (CV/1259/25):
N5 billion in aggravated and exemplary damages.
A perpetual injunction restraining the defendant from making further defamatory comments.
A retraction and unreserved apology were published in at least two national newspapers and on the same media platforms where the statements were originally made.
Post-judgment interest of 10% annually until the judgment debt is fully paid.

Akpoti-Uduaghan emphasized that the defamatory remarks portray her as a serial manipulator and extortionist, which she says is not only false but meant to derail her efforts as a strong voice for women in Nigerian politics.
“I am an inspiration to women in politics and aspiring young women. These attacks are not just on me but on every bold woman speaking truth to power,” she added.
No hearing date has been fixed as of the time of filing this report.
