Fake News Alert: INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu Not Sacked – Presidency, INEC Clarify.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Presidency have denied widespread social media reports alleging the sack of INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, by President Bola Tinubu.

A viral message circulated on WhatsApp had falsely claimed that President Tinubu had removed Mahmood Yakubu and replaced him with Prof. Bashiru Olamilekan. The message, which lacked attribution or official confirmation, triggered confusion and concern across digital platforms.

Reacting swiftly to the misinformation, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, debunked the claim. Speaking to Vanguard, he said plainly, “Please, disregard. It is not true.”

Yakubu, currently serving his second term as INEC Chairman, is expected to complete his tenure by the end of the year. The official process for appointing a new INEC Chairman involves presidential nomination, security clearance by the Department of State Services (DSS), advisory input from the National Council of State, and final Senate confirmation.

In a related development, the Presidency also dismissed the rumour. The Senior Special Adviser to the President on Digital and New Media, Otega Ogra, urged the public to disregard the fake report.

In a post shared on social media, Ogra stated, “The Nigerian public should disregard any fake news making the rounds about the replacement of the INEC Chairman. Any such announcement will come from the SGF’s office or any other appropriate official source.”

The incident highlights the growing concern over fake news and misinformation on social media, especially on sensitive matters relating to Nigeria’s democracy and electoral process.
