Masari: Tinubu Reveals How He Almost Withdrew from Presidential Race.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has disclosed that his former running mate, Aminu Masari, alongside other key supporters, played a crucial role in stopping him from withdrawing from the 2023 presidential race.

Speaking at a special Iftar at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu recounted a late-night encounter with a relative that nearly discouraged him from continuing his campaign.

Tinubu’s Tough Journey to Presidency

According to a statement from his media aide, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu revealed that his journey to the presidency was filled with obstacles. He narrated how a relative visited him at 3:30 am, lamenting the economic hardship caused by the naira redesign policy during the election period.

“He came to my living room and asked for N50,000 to buy foodstuff, saying even our wealthy uncle couldn’t access N10,000 in cash. He blamed me, saying, ‘The currency crisis is because of you. People are struggling in banks. What are you even running for?” Tinubu said.

Tinubu admitted that the conversation shook his resolve. “At that moment, I almost gave up. But thanks to Aminu Masari and others who stood by me. When I arrived in Abuja, Masari assured me, ‘I am the Chairman of the North West Group; don’t look back.’”

Tinubu’s Bold Decisions in Office

The president also addressed the economic challenges he inherited upon assuming office. He emphasized that he had to make immediate, tough decisions, including the removal of fuel subsidies, which was not originally part of his inauguration speech.
