The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old school gateman, Josiah Ayomide, for allegedly defiling a four-year-old pupil in Ibadan.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, disclosed this while briefing journalists at the Police headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan, on Thursday.
According to him, the case came to light after the victim complained of pains in her private part to her elder sister on August 29, 2025. The girl later confided in her mother that the school gatekeeper had unlawfully raped her while at school.
Medical Examination Confirms Abuse
Osifeso said the suspect was arrested and confessed to the crime.
He added that a medical examination carried out at the Police Medical Clinic, Eleyele, revealed that the girl’s hymen was not intact, with bruises and tenderness around her vulva and vagina.
The PPRO assured that the suspect would be prosecuted once the investigations were concluded.
Other Arrests by Oyo Police
In a related development, the command also arrested two men, Azeez Kolawole and Isah Fatai, for allegedly stealing goats around Ibadan using a Toyota Matrix without a number plate. Both suspects had previously been arrested and charged for the same offence, but allegedly continued the criminal act.
The command further reported the arrest of suspected kidnappers, armed robbers, and hijackers across the state as part of its ongoing crime-fighting efforts.
Broader Concerns Over Child Safety
Cases of sexual abuse against children in schools have been on the rise in Nigeria, raising concerns over the safety of pupils in educational institutions. Reports of gatekeepers, teachers, and staff allegedly defiling children have surfaced in several states.

Calls for Stronger Protection Measures
Advocacy groups, including Stand to End Rape Initiative and Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA), have urged governments and school authorities to enforce strict vetting of school staff, regular monitoring, and community awareness programs. They also emphasized the importance of medical and psychological support for survivors of abuse.
