In a strategic move to strengthen the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki has been appointed Chairman of the party’s Reconciliation and Strategy Committee.
The committee’s mandate is to resolve internal conflicts, restore party unity, and craft a winning political strategy to reposition Nigeria’s main opposition party as a formidable force.
Saraki Engages Enugu Governor, Key PDP Figures in Nationwide Consultations
In a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, @bukolasaraki, Saraki revealed that he had just concluded a critical strategy session in Enugu with Governor Peter Mbah, Senator Seriake Dickson, and Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo.
“We didn’t sidestep the issues. We confronted the fractures in our foundation, asked the hard questions, and began shaping a real, workable plan to move our party forward,” Saraki stated.
PDP’s Strategy: Rebuild from Within, Reconnect with Grassroots
- The committee, inaugurated by the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), is tasked with engaging disenchanted stakeholders, state governors, grassroots members, and former aspirants.
- Saraki’s appointment is seen as a strategic step, given his role in past party reforms and his cross-party influence.
- “I believe in what the PDP has stood for — and what it can still become,” he said. “But it will take hard, unglamorous work to rebuild from the inside out.”
2023 Setbacks Prompt Urgent Reforms
Following the PDP’s underwhelming performance in the 2023 elections, internal divisions and leadership disputes weakened the party’s national presence. The Reconciliation Committee now aims to address lingering grievances, foster ideological unity, and deliver a renewed blueprint ahead of 2027.

More Regional Engagements to Follow
The Enugu meeting marks the committee’s first major consultation, with further engagements scheduled in northern, western, and southern regions.
Party insiders hint that the PDP is working on a rebranding strategy, alongside its reconciliation efforts, to reignite public confidence and reassert itself as a credible alternative to the ruling APC.
