The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has strongly criticized the endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the sole All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the 2027 presidential election, calling it a desperate attempt to cling to power amid growing public discontent.
In a statement issued Thursday night, CUPP’s National Secretary, Peter Ameh, described the move, led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma and Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani at the APC National Summit, as undemocratic and out of touch with the Nigerian people.
CUPP Raises Alarm Over Sole Candidacy Endorsement
Ameh noted that the early adoption of Tinubu, just two years into his first term, has sparked “serious concerns among Nigerians,” many of whom are battling economic hardship, rising inflation, and unemployment.
“The adoption of Tinubu as sole candidate for 2027 does not reflect the will of the Nigerian people, whose votes will ultimately decide the election,” said CUPP.
The coalition warned that the move suggests fear of electoral rejection among APC leaders, rather than confidence in the President’s current performance.
Public Backlash and Warning Ahead of 2027
CUPP further accused the APC of being disconnected from the masses, stating that Nigerians see the endorsement as an attempt to undermine the democratic process and pre-determine the outcome of the 2027 elections.
“The events of the 2023 elections were just a prelude. In 2027, we will resist any attempt to manipulate or rig the elections,” Ameh added.

Call to Action: CUPP Urges Nigerians to Defend Democracy
The coalition called on citizens to remain alert, protect their voting rights, and resist any move that threatens the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy.
“The 2027 general elections will be a defining moment. We must not allow the will of the people to be subverted,” CUPP stated.
